The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the killing of Demola Akinloye in the Lekki area of the state by yet-to-be-identified gunmen travelling in a mini-bus.
The 50 years old victim was said to be driving home when he was attacked by the gunmen.
Confirming the incident on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ben Hundeyin, said the incident happened on Sunday around 12:30 p.m., along Chevron Drive, Lekki, while Akinloye was driving in his black Corolla near Bourdillon Court Estate’s gate.
Hundeyin said a distress call was received at the police station that a man, later identified as Akinloye, was shot and stabbed to death.
The PPRO said police visited the crime scene and one expended cartridge was recovered. The corpse was moved to a morgue in Ajah for preservation and autopsy.
It was further learnt that the killing caused panic in the community, leading to residents deserting the area.
A source who spoke with our correspondent said, following the murder of Akinloye, who was the son of the Ojomu of Ajiranland, the community has been deserted and fear now pervades tge area.
The source said when the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, visited the community on Monday, he urged residents to remain calm and continue with their lawful business, but many residents quickly fled from the community immediately the police boss left.
“The residents hinged their fear on possible reprisals over the death of the prince,” he said.
An estate management official, who also confirmed the incident, urged residents to steer clear of the Chevron, Agungi and Ajiran areas for their safety.
The warning was contained in a statement that read: “This is to notify all residents that the Ajiran (Agungi) king’s son was assassinated along Chevron Drive (close to Ebeano Supermarket) on Sunday.
“We, therefore, plead with our esteemed residents to avoid Chevron, Agungi and Ajiran for now for their safety.”
