Shehu Sani, a former Kaduna Central Senator, has said state governors will use state police to persecute opposition and rig elections.
Sani further warned that the governors will use state police to harass non-indigenes and counter federal police whenever necessary.
Posting on X, he said thugs affiliated with the ruling party may likely be recruited into the state police, if it is introduced.
According to the socio-political critic: “The State police will be used by the Governors to persecute the opposition, to harass ‘non-indigenes,’ to rig elections and to counter the federal police in case of conflict of interest between the Federal Government and the state. Most of the state ruling party thugs will be recruited into the state police.”
Sani spoke against the backdrop of reports that President Bola Tinubu and state governors are mulling the possibility of introducing state police to solve the country’s security challenges.
The establishment of state police was part of the discussions Tinubu had with governors during a meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, last week.
