Governor of Sokoto state, Ahmad Aliyu has expressed heartfelt commiseration with victims of the fire outbreak at Kara market timber shade, which destroyed property worth millions of naira.
The Governor, accompanied by APC leader, Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, the Minister of Labour and Employment Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, and other dignitaries, visited the site to assess the damage and offer support. He expressed shock at the extent of the losses and prayed for divine intervention to restore what was lost.
“The devastation here is unimaginable. I pray the Almighty Allah replaces what has been lost with something even better for the victims,” the Governor said.
He also urged citizens to exercise caution during the harmattan season, known for its increased risk of fire outbreaks due to its windy nature. “We must be vigilant in handling inflammable materials to avoid such tragedies,” he advised.
The Governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property while thanking the Sokoto State Fire Service and local residents for their swift and heroic efforts to control the inferno.
Meanwhile, in response to the disaster, Governor Ahmad Aliyu announced the formation of a seven-member committee led by Alhaji Dalhatu Sidi Mamman to investigate the fire’s cause, assess the extent of the damage, identify affected traders, and recommend assistance.
Other members of the committee include Hon. Bello Idris, Prof. Musa Garba Maitafsir, Col. Garba Moyi Isa (rtd), Hon. Ibrahim Hassan Chichi, one representative of the Nigerian Police and Muhammad Hayatuddeen Tsamiya who is expected to serve as Secretary.
The committee has three weeks to submit its findings and recommendations.
Victims of the inferno and members of the Timber Sellers Association commended the Governor’s prompt response and support during this difficult time.
