The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abuja, has inaugurated a steering committee to oversee kidney transplant procedures in the nation’s capital.
The committee, which is comprised of senior medical experts, is chaired by Dr. Ernest Aniede, a top Consultant Nephrologist.
According to a statement from the FMC’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Obadiah N.K. Gana, the formation of this committee is a proactive measure to address the rising incidence of kidney-related deaths both in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and across the country.
The high cost of treating kidney ailments, particularly transplants, has been a significant concern. In response, the FMC is implementing strategies to mitigate the shortage of expertise in this critical area.
The Medical Director of the FMC, Prof. Saad Ahmed, who inaugurated the committee, emphasised that this initiative is a preparatory step towards launching kidney transplants within the FCT.
He addressed Dr. Aniede and his team, urging them to work collaboratively with dedication and commitment to ensure the successful implementation of kidney transplant procedures at the facility.
Prof. Ahmed presented the committee members with their official letters of appointment and underscored the importance of giving the assignment the necessary attention and focus.
