The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a travel advisory for Nigerian nationals planning to visit Australia, citing concerns over the prevailing security situation in some cities.
The advisory comes amidst reports of discrimination, harassment, and verbal abuse targeted at foreigners, particularly in the wake of a recent surge in antisemitic and Islamophobic hate crimes in Australia.
A statement by the Acting Spokesperson of the Ministry, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, stated that while acknowledging Australia’s reputation for multiculturalism and tolerance, the Ministry notes that incidents of Islamophobia and antisemitism have occurred in certain areas.
“A disturbing incident in early December 2024, in which a car was set ablaze and anti-Israel graffiti was sprayed on nearby buildings in the Sydney suburb of Woollahra, highlights the need for caution.”
“Nigerian travellers and residents in Australia are advised to be mindful of the prevailing cultural and social dynamics to ensure their safety and comfort. Extra vigilance and necessary precautions are strongly recommended.”
“In the event of experiencing or witnessing any form of racist attack or harassment, Nigerian citizens are advised to contact the High Commission of Nigeria in Canberra for assistance.” He said.
The travel advisory serves as a reminder for Nigerian citizens to exercise caution when traveling abroad and to stay informed about local conditions and potential risks.
