The federal government is committed to keeping the peace with labour unions through open talks, says Labour Minister Mohammed Maigari Dingyadi. He spoke at his Sokoto home on Thursday, promising a strike-free economy.
Dingyadi said the government is working closely with union leaders to tackle issues and build a strong partnership. “We have been working closely with union leadership, including the labour union, to foster mutual understanding, encourage dialogue, and ensure that we carry everyone along. So far, this approach has been successful in preventing any major strike actions,” he said.
He addressed a recent two-day strike in Sokoto, calling it a local issue the government didn’t know about at first. Quick action resolved it in 48 hours, he added. “What is most important is that the government continues to work hand in hand with labour leaders, ensuring transparency and inclusivity in decision-making processes,” he noted.
Dingyadi praised labour leaders for helping maintain industrial peace. He’s hopeful this teamwork will last. “We believe that what workers want is their welfare, and this administration, under the leadership of President Tinubu, is committed to ensuring that workers receive what is due to them. In return, we expect their commitment to national progress,” he said.
He explained the government’s focus is on creating job opportunities, not just hiring directly. “When individuals are gainfully employed, job security is more assured, and the economy thrives,” he said, stressing self-employment as key.
Dingyadi thanked President Tinubu for backing efforts to connect workers, employers, and the government.
“The President has provided the necessary backing to continue engaging with all stakeholders to ensure that everyone understands their roles and responsibilities,” he said.
He also urged the media, especially labour reporters, to report fairly and accurately to boost unity and growth.
