The Association of Resident Doctors, ARD, in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, has announced Dr George Ebong as its new president. The association made this announcement at a dinner and awards event in Abuja on Saturday.
Dr Ebong, a staff member of Wuse District Hospital, is expected to serve as president for the next 24 months.
In his remarks, Ebong vowed to prioritise doctors’ welfare, lamenting that doctors in the FCT have become an endangered species.
According to him, his administration would work to resolve the challenges resident doctors face in Abuja.
“The medical profession in the FCT is afflicted with a litany of woes, from the salary arrears of members employed in 2023 to salary disparities, manpower shortages, non-payment of rural allowances, delayed salary payments, and unfavourable working conditions in our hospitals,” he said.
“We are an endangered species, just as the American bald eagle, the Chinese panda bear, and the Russian Siberian tiger have become endangered. The medical profession has become endangered.”
“Now is the time to change the course of this conversation. Now is the time to adopt a whole new approach. Now is the time to act—not because we love it, but because it is the only voice for those who are unheard,” he stated.
In his remarks, the outgoing president of ARD, FCT, Dr. Olayinka Rahmah, lauded members for their support throughout his administration.
