Nigeria’s manufacturing sector must evolve to meet the demands of a rapidly changing global landscape, according to Michael Olowe, PhD research associate in Industrial & Systems Engineering at North Carolina A&T State University. Olowe advocates for the integration of advanced manufacturing technologies as a means to revitalize Nigeria’s economy and improve its industrial capacity.
In an era where industries worldwide are increasingly relying on innovations like 3D printing, robotics, and automation, Olowe emphasizes that Nigeria must adopt these technologies to stay competitive. “Advanced manufacturing is no longer a luxury; it’s a necessity for Nigeria to remain relevant in the global manufacturing sector,” he said.

Olowe highlights the enormous potential these technologies hold for various sectors within Nigeria. “From healthcare to agriculture, adopting advanced manufacturing can reduce production costs, enhance product quality, and open up new industries,” he added. By moving towards automated and digital solutions, Nigeria can create more resilient and globally competitive industries.
The expert also stresses the importance of overhauling Nigeria’s educational system to align with modern industry needs. “Our universities and training programs must focus not just on theory but also on providing hands-on experience in digital and manufacturing technologies,” Olowe urged. This shift, he believes, will equip students with the skills needed to drive technological innovation and contribute meaningfully to the country’s industrialization.
Public-private partnerships, according to Olowe, are crucial to the successful adoption of advanced manufacturing in Nigeria. “Government investments in research and development, coupled with collaboration from private industry, are key to building an innovative manufacturing ecosystem that benefits all sectors of the economy,” he said.
Olowe, with extensive experience in industrial optimization and advanced manufacturing, believes Nigeria is well-positioned to become a leader in the global manufacturing arena. “By embracing advanced manufacturing, we can foster job creation, economic growth, and become a competitive force in the global market,” he concluded.
