Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen has insisted that the Reds remain underdogs in this season’s Premier League title race.
Owen also said Darwin Nunez has the potential to replace Mohamed Salah at Liverpool in the near future.
Liverpool currently top the Premier League table with five points ahead of Manchester City who have a game in hand.
Their key player Salah is currently injured after sustaining an hamstring injury while on international duty with the Egyptian national team at the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Asked about Liverpool’s title hopes this season, Owen told talkSPORT:
“So to be sat there top, five points ahead… I know they have played one more game than Manchester City… but five points top, you have to say they have got a right chance.
“But listen, Manchester City are still the team to beat.”
Owen added, “When you think of Liverpool for the future, obviously they are not going to be with Salah forever and he’s into his 30s now. Somebody is going to have to step up or they are going to have to replace him with someone who can try to replicate his goals.
“This guy [Nunez] is the one player in that team who has got the scope to be able to do that and I see him developing into an absolute force in the Premier League.”
