Former Liverpool player Dirk Kuyt has thrown his weight behind his ex-teammate Xabi Alonso as a suitable replacement for Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, citing Alonso’s impressive start to his managerial career.
Alonso, currently managing Bayer Leverkusen, has steered his team to an undefeated streak in the Bundesliga this season, holding a commanding lead over traditional powerhouse Bayern Munich. Additionally, Leverkusen has progressed to the Europa League quarter-finals, presenting Alonso with a platform to showcase his managerial prowess.
Liverpool views Alonso as an ideal candidate to succeed Klopp at the end of the season, given his success with Leverkusen and his strong ties to the club.
Kuyt expressed confidence in Alonso’s coaching abilities, noting his strategic thinking and leadership qualities both on and off the field during their playing days.
Reflecting on Alonso’s journey from player to manager, Kuyt remarked, telling Liverpool Echo: “Xabi was always a guy who was thinking tactically, both on and off the pitch. His progression from managing U23s teams to leading Leverkusen to title contention in Germany demonstrates his managerial acumen.”
Kuyt’s endorsement underscores the belief within Liverpool’s ranks that Alonso has the potential to continue the club’s success and legacy, should he be appointed as Klopp’s successor.
Kuyt added: “People can say maybe it [Alonso taking over from Klopp] has come too quick but sometimes good things come very quickly and for me, definitely, he was always a guy during our playing time that was always thinking about the game; thinking tactically; talking always tactically outside of the pitch.”
