The Enugu State Government has clarified its position on the reports over the collection of industrial gas emission levies, reiterating its commitment to due process, a stable and supportive business environment.
The Governor Peter Mbah Administration has equally directed the refund of any such levies so collected
This was even as it described as blatant falsehood reports in a section of the media alleging that the government had introduced fines for the use of renewable energy sources such as solar.
The government’s position was contained in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, and made available to newsmen on Wednesday.
“Recent reports have highlighted the collection of levies on alternative energy sources by consultants engaged by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.
“The government has directed that the collection of such levies cease immediately.
“Although the Environmental Protection Act grants the Ministry the authority to regulate gaseous emissions, it is essential that all measures are implemented in accordance with established due processes.
“Regrettably, it has come to our attention that the consulting firm responsible for these activities did
not follow the required procedures, leading to the premature activation of the levy.
“The decision to cancel the levies reflects the state government’s commitment to ensuring that regulatory measures are carried out with proper oversight. While the Ministry remains dedicated to
addressing climate change and protecting the environment, the Enugu State Government is equally committed to maintaining a supportive and stable business environment.
“Therefore, the Ministry is actively working with businesses affected by these levies to resolve all issues and rectify the situation.
“If you have been requested to make payments related to these levies, please report such requests to the Honourable Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change. We will take prompt action to address any concerns.
“We appreciate your continued support and vigilance as we strive to balance our environmental
initiatives with our broader economic objectives,” the statement read.
