The Emir of Kano, Khalifa Muhammad Sanusi II, has urged authorities to take decisive action against those responsible for the killing of Kano indigenes in Uromi, Edo State.
He emphasised that justice must be served to uphold peace and stability in the country.
During his Eid-ul-Fitr sermon at the Kofar Mata Eid ground in Kano on Sunday, the Emir stressed the need for swift and firm measures to prevent further violence. While acknowledging statements from some government officials regarding the incident, the Emir insisted that mere condemnation was insufficient.
He called for concrete steps to hold the perpetrators accountable, ensuring that such tragedies do not recur. The Emir also addressed the youth in Kano, urging them to avoid any acts of retaliation, reminding them that revenge is prohibited in Islam. He emphasised that peace and justice must be pursued through lawful means.
The gathering was attended by thousands of worshippers, including the Kano State Governor and his Deputy.
Meanwhile, the presidential candidate of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) in the last general elections, Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has strongly condemned the killing of 16 Northern travellers in Uromi, Edo State, calling for a thorough investigation and swift justice.
In a Facebook post, Senator Kwankwaso described the incident as barbaric and emphasised the right of all Nigerians to travel freely without fear of harassment or intimidation.
“I am concerned by the harrowing display of mob injustice on 16 travellers from Northern Nigeria in Edo State,” he stated.
He added that this tragedy, which unfolded on 27 March 2025 in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi, is another sad reminder of the barbarity of jungle justice. He urged authorities to launch a full-scale investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice.
“While praying for the repose of the victims, I extend my condolences to their families, the Kano State Government, and other affected states,” Senator Kwankwaso added.
In a related development, Senator Sani Musa (APC Niger), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, has strongly condemned the brutal killing of at least 16 travellers in Uromi, Edo State.
In a statement issued in Kano, Senator Musa described the incident as a heinous act that demands an unwavering response from security and judicial institutions. The victims, predominantly hunters from Rivers State, were ambushed by a vigilante group and armed youths while travelling to Kano to celebrate Sallah with their families.
Senator Musa emphasised that all individuals found complicit in the atrocity must be brought to justice, including law enforcement personnel who may have neglected their duty. He urged Nigerians to live in harmony, regardless of their differences.
“Those responsible for senseless killings should face justice to ensure peace, progress, and the development of our nation’s hard-earned unity. Nigeria remains a strong and united nation,” Senator Musa stated.
The lawmaker stressed the importance of national unity and collective condemnation of such heinous acts.
