The wife of Sen. Ike Ekweremadu, former Deputy Senate President, Beatrice Ekweremadu has reportedly been released from prison in the United Kingdom and is now back in Nigeria.
Her return on Tuesday marks the end of a sentence tied to a widely controversial organ trafficking case.
Beatrice, her husband Ike, and a medical doctor, Obinna Obeta were convicted in the UK in May 2023 for allegedly plotting to exploit a young boy from Lagos.
The boy, who was said to be a street hawker, was reportedly taken to the UK under false pretences to donate an organ for the couple’s ailing daughter, Sophia.
While Ike was handed a 10-year prison sentence, Beatrice received six years, despite her legal team raising concerns about her health during the trial.
The case stirred significant attention, becoming one of the most talked-about legal sagas involving a Nigerian politician.
Her return has sparked celebrations in Enugu State, where family, friends, and supporters have rallied around the Ekweremadus throughout the ordeal.
Many have expressed hope for Ike’s eventual release, with prayers and messages of support pouring in for the family.
