Eco Science Generation Initiative (EcoSciGen), an African youth-led organisation focused on making climate education and research accessible and practical, has launched a climate communication workshop in Nigeria

According to the organisation, the project seeks to empower 300 young Nigerians with the knowledge and skills to communicate climate change effectively to diverse stakeholders from different realities

In a statement on Wednesday by the Communications Officer, EcoSciGen, Abdulrahman Arogundade, the organisation said, “It has become imperative that as we continue to mobilise action to create meaningful change and spread more awareness about climate change. We have climate actors who can effectively simplify the climate science processes for different people from diverse realities.

“Through the workshop, we will bridge the knowledge gap in the climate landscape by empowering young people to be knowledgeable and influential voices in tackling Africa’s climate crisis.

“The workshop includes a one-day on-site session in different states in Nigeria and mentorship for top participant initiatives.

“In our pursuit of a more climate-resilient world, it is crucial to have climate actors who possess a comprehensive understanding of climate change and are capable of imparting that knowledge to individuals from diverse backgrounds.”

It noted that climate change poses a significant challenge to Nigeria, noting that with rising temperatures and changing precipitation patterns, Nigeria is experiencing more frequent and severe weather-related events.

The organisation stated that according to a research report by Africa Talks Climate Initiative, a lack of proper understanding of the science of climate change impedes the rate at which people can take action in Nigeria

Also, the founder of EcoSciGen, Jumoke Omodeni, said, “We need more young people that are knowledgeable, have facts and statistics on climate change and can communicate climate change to different people in the most confident way possible.

“This workshop will build the capacity of young people to communicate climate change effectively. We can inspire real action and create a more resilient and sustainable future for all.”

Interested young people between 18 and 35 years are encouraged to send their application to the organisation on or before the May 20, 2024 deadline.
