The Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVCNU) has again urged the Federal Government to yield to the last agreement ŕeached with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), saying it shouldn’t push the union to the level of embarking on a fresh industrial action.
The Secretary General of the committee, Prof Yakubu Ochefu, stated this in an exclusive interview with Tribune Online over the weekend, saying the committee also raised similar concern last year when they reached the agreement, encouraging each party to go by the terms of the agreement.
He explained that at the moment, there is already trust deficient between the two parties concerning the agreement.
He noted that the federal government not honouring past agreements with ASUU had been what triggered the union to embark on strike and that the federal government should not allow the current situation to drag to that level again.
He said in a few months, their last agreement would reach one year without fulfillment, adding that that alone had created some levels of distrust again between the two parties.
He said industrial action cannot do Nigeria any good and therefore both the federal government and ASUU should prevent it.
