TOWARDS raising the consciousness of Africans to the great travel destinations in Africa, Wakanow has taken a giant leap in creating Destinations Africa, a television documentary spanning the best 21 countries in Africa, which will soon hit the screens.
Managing Director, Wakanow, Obinna Ekezie disclosed this at a gathering of key operators of the tourism industry from across Africa when it hosted some of the delegates to this year’s Akwaaba, African Travel Market that ended over the week.
According to him, Wakanow took the giant stride with to expose Africa to Africans and the world, as it has never been done.
He said: “We now recognise the opportunity to develop Africa as a destination because we know that we need to promote Africa if we need Africa to develop and no one has taken the challenge to open it up because it is a huge task and that is why we are making this huge investment to showcase Africa not just to Africans, but to the world.’’
Speaking on the website for the Destination Africa project, Ekezie said the site is being developed for the huge project where various segments and packages on the continent would be on display for people to see.
He further disclosed that Wakanow is also building a partnership with all the travel trade operators, particularly airlines and governments to achieve this onerous vision. “Ensuring that travel within the continent is affordable is the only way to interest Africans and the rest of the world,” he argued.
Also speaking at the entertaining and interactive night, the Head of Marketing of the group, Mrs. Victoria Onwubiko disclosed how the company has succeeded in transforming what she described as the fragmented Nigerian travel market to a semblance of organised and well coordinated platform that is now the envy of many.
‘‘Today, Wakanow is number one online travelling booking portal out of Nigeria, providing a one -stop shop for tickets, hotels, visa processing and international travel SIM. With over 35, 000 visitors to our site everyday and over 300, 000 customers on our database, we are the melting point of travel in Africa,’’ Onwubiko declared.
The event climaxed when Ekezie was decorated by the team from Kenyan Tourism Board (KTB) as a Massai chief.
A Kenyan musical artiste and tourism cultural ambassador for Kenya, Mrs. Emma Kosgei, alongside Boma dancers from Kenya and Nigerian, Yomi Sax, entranced the audience with soothing performances.
