The Vice Chancellor of Delta State University, Abraka, Professor Andy Egwunyenga, has ordered an investigation into the cause of alleged violence and disorderly conduct during the social activities forming part of the Students’ Union Week.
This was contained in an official bulletin released by the university, copies of which were made available to journalists in Warri on Saturday.
The bulletin partly reads, “The University administration received with sadness and strong disapproval the report of violence and disorderly conduct involving some students and Student Union officials at the Pre-Degree Hall and other parts of the university between 6:39 pm and 7:30 pm on Wednesday, 5th June 2024.
“This is utterly unacceptable and highly condemnable. It is a breach of the extant regulations of the University, governing the conduct of students. After a review of the report, a committee has been constituted to investigate the remote and immediate causes of the unfortunate incident. All those found culpable after due investigation shall be dealt with in accordance with extant university regulations.
“In the meantime, the Vice-Chancellor has approved that, the remaining events of the Students’ Week continue peacefully while awaiting the report of the committee. All students are therefore urged to conduct themselves properly pending the outcome of the investigation.”
PUNCH Online gathered that the supposed fun-filled week in DELSU, being the institution’s Students’ Week, was on Wednesday marred when a fight broke out between the President of the Students’ Union Government, Mathias Jimson and a departmental president.
According to sources, against laid down rules, the Department of Accounting organised a welcome party for fresh students.
This did not go down well with the SUG president who upon arrival at the event ordered the organisers to end the programme.
He reportedly said that there ought not to be any other school event alongside the ongoing student week.
The party was disrupted as the SUG president was alleged to have attacked one of the esteemed guests with a dangerous object while the students present did not take this uncalled-for act lightly and there was chaos.
Attempts to speak with Jimson proved abortive as of the time of filing this report.
