Delta State Police Command officers held a statewide sanitation exercise, free medical outreach, student talks, and town hall meetings over the weekend to celebrate the 2025 inaugural National Police Day. These events aimed to boost police-community ties and public welfare, said SP Bright Edafe, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, in a Saturday statement.
Edafe noted that the activities spanned all eight Area Commands simultaneously. “The statewide sanitation exercise, free medical outreach, and student outreach, as well as town hall meetings, were held to foster community engagement, promote public health, and enhance the police’s collective environment,” he said.
For the student outreach, officers teamed up with POCACOV and DSS representatives to visit selected primary and secondary schools. “They engaged students on topics such as personal safety, the role of law enforcement, and good citizenship with emphasis on the avoidance of cybercrimes, cultism and drug abuse,” Edafe explained.
The town hall meeting, led by Commissioner of Police CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, encouraged open dialogue.
“It brought together key stakeholders from the PCRC, Honorary Mess members, State Anti-Cult, Vigilant Groups, members of Nigeria hunters, traditional rulers, and senior police officers to discuss pressing security concerns, foster dialogue, and encourage mutual understanding,” he said.
“The engagement was frank, fruitful, and inspiring—showing that security is truly a shared responsibility.”
The medical outreach helped hundreds. “Police medical professionals on the ground attended to hundreds of beneficiaries, leaving a positive mark on the community,” Edafe added. Services included blood pressure checks, malaria tests, consultations, and free medicines.
Also, CP Abaniwonda led a clean-up on 5 April at Ogbogonogo Market in Asaba and other public spots across local governments. “CP Abaniwonda, ACP Alex Udeze, the Area Commander Asaba, and other officers and men of the command came together to clean public spaces,” Edafe said. “This effort symbolised the police’s commitment not just to law enforcement but to a healthier and safer society.”
