Defections: PDP unshaken in Plateau — State party chairman

Following the gale of defections rocking the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, across the country, the Plateau State chapter of the party has stated it is unbothered by the defections because of its strength, credibility, and acceptability in the state.

The chairman of the party in the state, Chris Hassan, speaking at a press conference on Thursday in Jos, expressed optimism that PDP would bounce back to power despite the apparent challenges. He urged party members to remain calm and resolute, emphasising that defections are not uncommon in political party processes.

Hassan was reacting to the defection of the Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, to the All Progressives Congress, APC, on Thursday after leaving PDP.

He commended Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang for his political sagacity, outstanding leadership, and commitment to good governance, highlighting the governor’s developmental strides, equity, justice, and service to the people.

According to him, the PDP-led administration in Plateau has achieved remarkable progress in the state, thereby building trust among the people—trust that does not warrant a change in party.

The chairman said, “We are deeply grateful for the support of our party faithful and the good people of Plateau State who have reposed confidence in us. We are aware of a lot of threats of defection across some states. We have noted some isolated cases of defections by a few party members to our political parties.

“Let me therefore urge all party members to remain calm and resolute. Defections are not new in political party processes of this nature. However, we are confident that the strength and credibility of the PDP are founded on the struggles of our Plateau people.”

Hassan maintained that PDP would continue to provide opportunities for the aspirations of the Plateau people to be fulfilled, noting that better days lie ahead for all.

Speaking on the recent killings in Bokkos and Bassa local government councils of the state, the state PDP chairman condemned the attacks in strong terms, stating that had the governor not responded swiftly, the casualties would have been far greater.

He affirmed the party’s support for the governor’s call for communities to participate in local security efforts, in collaboration with neighbouring communities, to protect lives and property.

The PDP party leader in Plateau remarked that the dynamics of insecurity in the state have since changed, necessitating a grassroots-driven approach as a proactive measure against marauders. He urged all Plateau citizens to continue supporting the government, remain vigilant, and stay committed to preserving the security and unity of the state.
