The Cross River State government has vowed to protect its varsity, the University of Cross River (UNICROSS), from the activities of land grabbers.
The government made this known when the Asset Management and Recovery Team paid a working visit to the institution.
Speaking during the visit, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Asset Management and Recovery, Gilbert Agbor, decried the rate of land grabbing in the institution.
“If land grabbers are allowed to penetrate into the institution, what will happen when there is room for expansion?”
“The state government has received petitions on the sales of some assets of the University without due process.”
“Our responsibility is to get to the root of it and whoever is involved, no matter how highly placed, will be made to give an account,” he said.
He directed that a monitoring team be put in place to ensure that no materials are allowed into the encroached areas where construction is presently ongoing.
The Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Francisca Bassey, assured the government’s team of an enabling environment to carry out their duties without interference.
