The Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders (CONYL), the umbrella body of all the youth groups drawn across the six geo-political zones, has expressed their heartfelt appreciation and admiration for the tireless efforts of the Chairman/CEO of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. General Buba Marwa (rtd), in combating and eradicating drug abuse in Nigeria.
The youth body said that Marwa’s leadership and unwavering commitment to this cause have made a profound impact, adding that the positive changes that have taken place under his guidance are evident.
In a statement issued in Owerri on Saturday by the President General of CONYL, Comrade Goodluck Ibem, he said that the arrest of 18,500 suspected drug traffickers and the seizure of 2.6 million kilograms of illicit drugs in 2024 by the NDLEA is the first of its kind since the agency was established.
Describing it as a groundbreaking achievement, the PG said that the steps NDLEA has taken in promoting awareness, providing resources for recovery, and supporting those who have struggled with addiction have undoubtedly saved lives and changed futures.
He said, “The vision of NDLEA headed by Gen. Marwa for a drug-free environment has inspired many, and his relentless determination to ensure the success of anti-drug initiatives has helped reduce the devastating effects of drugs and substance abuse. Gen. Marwa has restored the integrity of the nation among the comity of nations.”
The body acknowledged that the chairman has restored the confidence of international drug agencies like the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), which is evident in the support given to the NDLEA to succeed in its fight against illicit drugs.
According to him, the donation of the Central Exhibit Office in Ikoyi, Lagos, to the NDLEA by the US government is a confirmation that the NDLEA is on top of the game against drug abuse.
CONYL commended the ability of the agency to foster a sense of unity and purpose in the fight against drug abuse.
He said, “The current leadership has not only created a safe environment but has also empowered individuals to rise above their challenges. It is through the efforts of the NDLEA that many have been able to find hope, healing, and a brighter future.”
The body expressed their deepest gratitude for the remarkable contributions of the NDLEA in saving some Nigerian youths whose futures would have been destroyed by drug abuse.
According to them, the dedication of the agency to this important cause is truly inspiring, adding that they are confident that their service to humanity will continue to benefit countless individuals for years to come.
CONYL expressed their appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing Brig. General Buba Marwa to head such an important agency, adding that he has done so well and is a round peg in a round hole.
He said, “We appreciate and thank Brig. General Buba Marwa and his team for their unwavering commitment to eradicating drug abuse and for being a true leader in the fight against drug abuse.”
The body called on the general public to support the efforts of the NDLEA in eradicating drug abuse in society by giving useful information to the agency in order to serve Nigerians better.
