Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has approved Prince Akeem Abimbola Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo. Following his official presentation of the Staff of Office and certificate of appointment, congratulatory messages have poured in from across and beyond the state. Prince Owoade now steps into the revered position as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo.
The Alaafin-elect has proceeded to Oyo town, where he will commence the traditional 21-day rites marking his ascension to the throne.
Hon. Olayinka Oladimeji, a Germany-based Nigerian entrepreneur and ICT consultant, joined others in congratulating the people of Oyo on the historic selection of Prince Owoade.
In his statement, Hon. Segelu, a frontline aspirant for the 2027 Oyo State gubernatorial election under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), urged the new Alaafin to prioritize peace and unity. He described the prince’s emergence as a significant step towards a prosperous and culturally enriched Oyo kingdom.
“The emergence of Prince Owoade marks the beginning of a new era of prosperity, unity, and cultural preservation for Oyo. I believe he will honor the legacy of his predecessors, particularly the late Oba Lamidi Atanda Adeyemi III, whose leadership was exemplary,” Segelu said.
He also praised the royal family, kingmakers, and the people of Oyo for their patience and dedication during the nearly three-year selection process. Additionally, he commended Governor Makinde for creating an enabling environment for the smooth transition.
Segelu urged Prince Owoade to unite the kingdom and foster inclusivity among the Oyomesi, stressing that the new Alaafin should act as a pillar of justice and hope for all.
Prof. Adeniyi Olowofela, the Federal Character Commissioner representing Oyo State, also extended his congratulations in a personally signed statement. The former Commissioner for Education described the appointment as a milestone in Oyo’s history.
“Congratulations to Prince Akeem Abimbola Owoade, Governor Seyi Makinde, and the people of Oyo State. This is a significant chapter in the rich history of Oyo, a kingdom renowned for its culture and traditions,” Olowofela wrote.
He applauded Governor Makinde for ensuring a seamless transition and preserving unity during the selection process. He also expressed hope for a prosperous reign under Alaafin Owoade, wishing the new king wisdom, strength, and vision to guide his leadership.
