Worried by the escalating insecurity across the country, concerned citizens of Nigeria and credible leadership support have called for political solutions to address security challenges in the country.
Addressing a press conference in Abuja on Friday, the group said that the more resources diverted to fighting preventable and needless violence and other forms of insecurity, the fewer resources will be available to invest in the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which promises to build a trillion-dollar Nigerian economy within the next decade by focusing on his ongoing efforts on job creation, access to capital for small and large businesses, inclusiveness, the rule of law and the fight against hunger, poverty and corruption.
The concerned citizens appealed to President Bola Tinubu to unconditionally release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) for peace to return to the south-eastern region of Nigeria.
According to the group, the issue of rising insecurity in the nation, particularly in the Southeast region, could be resolved if the detained IPOB leader is released.
The group, led by Capt. Bishop C. Johnson of the US Army (Rtd), highlighted the detrimental impact of insecurity on the nation’s development, emphasising the diversion of resources from vital sectors such as infrastructure, employment, education, and healthcare.
Drawing attention to the root causes of insecurity, including political missteps and exploitation by criminal elements, the group called on the President to pursue political solutions as a means of national reconciliation.
Specifically, they urged a re-evaluation of the case of Nnamdi Kanu and emphasised the importance of dialogue in resolving political agitations.
According to Capt. Bishop C. Johnson, who briefed the press on behalf of the group, “It is better to embrace political solutions to political agitations. Dialogue is key.
“Therefore, continuing the detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is not the solution; rather, it creates a situation that enables certain elements to cause chaos in society, and it’s happening already,” he said.
Highlighting the potential positive impact of releasing Nnamdi Kanu, the group emphasised his capacity to contribute to stemming insecurity and redirecting security efforts to regions facing more serious threats.
They underscored his condemnation of criminality during his last court appearance as evidence of his commitment to peace and stability.
