The Kaduna State Commissioner for Human Services and Social Development, Hajiya Rabi Salisu, has called for the support of journalists to promote inclusivity and combat Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in communities across the state.
To this end, she appealed to journalists to use their platforms to raise awareness, amplify survivors’ voices, and drive social change, emphasising the media’s role in fostering a safer society.
“GBV is becoming a menace, and journalists will help in reporting this ugly trend to create a better society. We’ll seek your support to drive this social change,” she stressed.
Hajiya Salisu made this known when she hosted a combined Iftar (breaking of fast) for members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Kaduna State Council and the Joint Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) in the state.
The Commissioner also urged journalists to report on inclusive content, especially on disability issues, and to promote accurate representation of persons with disabilities in the media.
Hajiya Salisu emphasised the importance of building strong relationships and partnerships to foster greater collaboration and understanding between the media and the disability community.
She noted that the Uba Sani-led government has given her ministry tremendous support, enabling them to remain active and ensuring they execute their mandate appropriately.
Abdulgafar Alabelewe, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kaduna State Council, remarked that the Commissioner, Hajiya Rabi Salisu, has been a close associate of journalists since her active days in the Arida Foundation.
Alabelewe stated that it was the duty of journalists, as progressives, to continue supporting her ministry and the administration of Senator Uba Sani, who is running an inclusive government and building human capacity.
He expressed hope that the Commissioner would represent Kaduna State at the federal level in due course.
There were goodwill messages from dignitaries and journalists at the event, all aimed at promoting peace and harmony in the state and Nigeria at large.
