…calls for national unity, justice
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has extended warm congratulations to the Muslim community in Nigeria on the occasion of Eid-el-Fitr, emphasizing unity, national harmony, and a collective commitment to justice.
In a statement signed by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN highlighted the shared values between Christians and Muslims, noting that prayer, fasting, charity, and community strengthen the bonds between the two religious groups and serve as pillars for a united Nigeria.
However, the association also took the opportunity to address pressing national concerns, particularly the rising insecurity and economic difficulties that have burdened many Nigerians.
Archbishop Okoh expressed deep sorrow over the recent extrajudicial killing of sixteen hunters in Uromi, Edo State, who were mistakenly accused of being kidnappers and brutally lynched by a mob.
“This extrajudicial killing is a grievous violation of human rights and a chilling reminder of the dangers of lawlessness.

“We extend our deepest sympathy to the families of these hunters, who now mourn the loss of their loved ones taken in such a senseless and brutal manner,” Okoh stated.
The CAN leader urged the Nigerian government to take immediate and decisive action to address these failures in law enforcement and to ensure that those responsible for the killings are brought to justice.
He stressed that unchecked acts of violence and mob justice could further erode public trust in the nation’s legal system.
Despite the challenges facing the nation, Archbishop Okoh encouraged Nigerians to remain hopeful and to use this moment as a call to unite for peace and security.
He called on all citizens to practice charity, support one another, and reject acts of violence and division.
The statement also reaffirmed CAN’s commitment to interfaith dialogue and cooperation with Muslim leaders, stressing that fostering mutual understanding and rejecting extremism can help build a stronger and more peaceful nation.
“As we extend our goodwill on Eid-el-Fitr, let us embrace compassion, forgiveness, and mutual respect—values that can lead us towards a Nigeria where every life is cherished and protected,” the statement concluded.
CAN’s message of solidarity and call for justice resonates at a time when Nigeria continues to grapple with security and economic challenges.
By advocating for peace and upholding the rule of law, religious leaders hope to foster an environment where unity and tolerance thrive.
