Former Chief of Army Staff Lt-Gen Tukur Buratai (retd) has urged Nigerian leaders to reject hate speech and embrace diversity to foster a cohesive nation.
Buratai also called on leaders to uphold values of integrity, leadership, and service to the nation.
The retired Army Chief spoke at the graduation ceremony of the Leadership and National Cohesion Course 2 of 2024, organised by the Martin Luther Agwai International Peacekeeping Center (MLAILPKC) in collaboration with the Japanese Government through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
He said, “Note that your role as leaders is crucial in upholding the principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, and dignity, even in the face of adversity. As leaders, you must foster a culture of tolerance, empathy, and understanding, where every individual feels valued, respected, and included.”
Buratai emphasised that leadership and national cohesion are more critical today than ever, given the increasing complexity of the modern world and the challenges it presents. He noted that these issues require collective action, collaboration, and a deep sense of shared purpose.
“As leaders, you have critical roles to play in promoting national cohesion and building a more united, stable, and prosperous society. You are ambassadors of hope, beacons of positive change, and champions of national cohesion,” he added.
He highlighted the importance of equipping leaders with the knowledge and competencies to navigate complex challenges, bridge divides, and inspire collective action.
Buratai charged leaders to promote education, community engagement, and economic opportunities, adding, “You must reject hate speech and celebrate diversity, recognising that unique backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives are the very fabrics that strengthen a society.”
Meanwhile, the Commandant of MLAILPKC, Maj.-Gen. Ademola Adedoja, noted that any nation without leadership and national cohesion would ultimately face disintegration, instability, and stagnation.
He stressed the need to develop a new generation of visionary leaders who can inspire and unite people towards a common goal.
