Some British Members of Parliament of Nigerian descents have shared their thoughts on the recently concluded Black History Month in October.
Among those reflecting on the commemorative event were Labour MP for Southend East and Rochford, Bayo Alaba, and Labour and Cooperative MP for Edmonton and Winchmore Hill, Kate Osamor.
The politicians emphasised the significance of Black History Month in remembering important people and events in the history of the African diaspora.
In a post on his social media platforms on Monday, Alaba stated that he visited Kultura Verse, a community group that celebrates diversity through various cultural events.
He asserted that the gathering brought “a power and a magic to us, enriching our culture and strengthening our community.”
“Our mission is to celebrate our rich cultural heritage to inform, reclaim narratives, and empower our own community while being inclusive of wider communities,” Alaba added.
In her reflection on the event, Osamor called for the reclamation of narratives in authentic ways devoid of misrepresentation.
“It is essential that these narratives are represented authentically, free from distortion. Let us take ownership of our history and embrace our role as storytellers, sharing the true stories that reflect our heritage and contributions.”
