The Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has stated that without adequate security in the state, Benue, as the ‘Food Basket of the Nation’, would not be able to thrive and provide food security for its residents and the nation at large.
The governor made this assertion during a courtesy visit by the newly posted Commissioner of Police, CP Hassan Steve Yabane, at the Government House in Makurdi.
According to a press statement issued by Tersoo Kula, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Alia expressed concern over the pervasive insecurity plaguing the state, including attacks by herders and unknown gunmen, leading to the displacement of many residents who seek refuge in IDP camps.
He also pointed out the presence of internet fraudsters, otherwise known as “Yahoo Yahoo” or 419, operating in hotels across the state.
Governor Alia expressed confidence in CP Yabane’s ability to tackle the security challenges, given his prior experience in the state, and urged for proactive measures, particularly in the local governments most affected by insecurity, including Kwande, Katsina-Ala, Logo, Ukum, Guma, parts of Makurdi, Gwer West, Gwer East, Apa, and Agatu.
Alia lamented the occupation of farmlands by armed herders during the farming season, stating the need for active policing to address this issue.
He called for a collective effort to maintain peace and stability, stating that his administration would not tolerate any attempts to disrupt the peace process.
The Governor urged CP Yabane to uphold the rule of law and ensure that all residents abide by it.
He also raised concerns about roadblocks on routes to Nasarawa and called for improved community relations to foster cooperation between the police and crisis-ridden communities.
In response, Yabane assured the governor of his commitment to addressing the security challenges in Benue State.
He pledged to initiate crime mapping to identify flashpoints and warned criminals to leave the state or face the consequences of the law.
Recognising Benue’s significance as the nation’s food supplier, CP Yabane affirmed the police’s dedication to safeguarding lives and properties.
The visit concluded with both parties affirming their readiness to collaborate in restoring peace and security to Benue State.
