Attacks on Plateau communities genocide — Gov Mutfwang

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has decried the recent security challenges that have beleaguered some communities in the state, particularly the attacks in Bokkos, and has unequivocally described them as acts of “terrorism and genocide.”

He equally expressed deep concern over the growing humanitarian crisis, highlighting the displacement of thousands and the overstretched healthcare system.

Mutfwang made this statement while speaking during the inaugural Plateau Business Coalition for Health Summit, hosted by the Nigerian Medical Association, Plateau State chapter, in Jos.

According to him, “These are not communal clashes or farmer-herder conflicts. What we are witnessing is a calculated, professional, and systematic attempt to wipe out a people; this is ethnic cleansing. We must stop hiding behind euphemisms and confront the hard truth,” he asserted.

He, however, assured the citizenry of his administration’s resilience and ongoing efforts to restore peace and normalcy.

Arogidigba Global Journal recalls that in the past two weeks, over 50 people were killed in some communities of Bokkos LGA in the state, leaving thousands displaced and properties destroyed as a result of attacks by assailants.

Speaking further, the governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to revitalising the health sector to enhance the quality of life of the citizenry.

He also emphasised the need for robust collaboration between the public and private sectors to mobilise resources and drive transformative change in the healthcare sector.

He called for innovative financing models and bold policy reforms to reposition the state’s health infrastructure, stressing the urgency of upgrading facilities, acquiring modern equipment, and attracting and retaining skilled medical personnel.

According to him, “The time has come for us to think outside the box. The reality is clear and sobering: the public treasury alone cannot bear the full burden of our healthcare needs.

“We must engage the private sector meaningfully to bridge the financing gap,” he declared.

The governor also highlighted key achievements since assuming office, including major upgrades at the Plateau State Specialist Hospital and the planned establishment of a full-fledged Faculty of Medicine at the Plateau State University.

He announced active collaborations with international partners, such as a German medical exchange programme and an Israeli-supported telemedicine initiative aimed at improving access to quality healthcare across the state.

Mutfwang paid glowing tribute to medical professionals in the state, describing them as “miracle workers,” and pledged to improve their working conditions.

“Healthcare is not for the indifferent. It demands passion, precision, and sacrifice. We are committed to creating an enabling environment for you to flourish,” he assured.

He called on all stakeholders to join hands in advancing Plateau’s health indices beyond the national average.

“Each of us has a part to play. The future of our children, our mothers, and our communities depends on the choices we make today,” the governor emphasised.
