Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, of the Abia State University Uturu, have suspended their strike action seven days after they downed tools.
The union suspended the industrial action after it held an emergency congress today at the university’s main campus in Uturu, where the academic staff resolved to return to class.
The university’s chairman of ASUU, Dr Chidi Slessor Mba, confirmed the development, saying that Governor Alex Otti has shown commitment to meeting the demands of the union, which centred on the demand for 11-month arrears of salary, among other matters, by inviting them for a dialogue.
Mbah expressed confidence that the governor will meet the demands of his union as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, some students of the school who returned from the Christmas and New Year holidays said the calling off of the strike was a piece of good news to them as it would have distorted their academic calendar.
Arogidigba Global Journal recalls that the chairman of the Governing Council of Abia State University, Mba Ukariwo, had a few days ago appealed to ASUU members in the institution to call off the strike and engage in dialogue concerning their complaints.
