The Nigerian Army’s 81 Division, and the Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, have commenced a full-scale investigation into the cause of a deadly explosion that rocked the Idi-Araba area of Mushin Local Government Area, Lagos, on Friday.
The explosion, which occurred at a metal scrap yard in the densely populated community, resulted in the death of one person and left at least two others injured. The incident sent shockwaves across the neighbourhood, prompting an immediate response from military and police authorities.
The Nigerian Army confirmed the development in a statement issued on Saturday by the Division’s spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Ayeni, who said a collaborative investigation had been launched to uncover the origin and nature of the blast.
“The Counter Improvised Explosive Device (CIED) Squadron of the 81 Division has been directed to work closely with the Police EOD team to conduct a detailed investigation into the cause of the explosion and to ensure the safety of the surrounding community,” Ayeni stated.
The blast reportedly occurred at a scrap metal collection point, a common feature in several parts of Lagos where informal recyclers gather and process discarded materials. Such sites often contain a variety of metallic objects, some of which may pose a risk if improperly handled or stored.
Residents who witnessed the explosion described a sudden loud bang that caused panic in the area. Many feared a bomb or gas explosion, leading to chaos as people fled the immediate vicinity. Emergency responders, including personnel from the Army and Police, were quickly deployed to the scene to secure the area and provide first aid to the injured.
Ayeni confirmed that two people sustained injuries from the explosion and were receiving medical attention, while the body of the deceased had been recovered and identified. He assured the public that all necessary steps were being taken to ensure such an incident does not recur.
“In line with our mandate to support civil authorities and ensure public safety, the Nigerian Army is committed to working with sister security agencies to protect lives and property,” Ayeni said.
As part of the investigation, the joint CIED and Police team will conduct a forensic analysis of materials recovered from the site, interview witnesses, and assess whether hazardous items or materials were improperly stored or handled at the scrap yard.
Authorities also plan to inspect similar scrap collection points in the area to prevent further incidents, amid rising concerns over public safety in informal industrial locations scattered across the city.
The Division called on residents of Mushin and surrounding areas to remain calm and avoid spreading panic or misinformation. It also urged anyone with useful information regarding the explosion to come forward and assist investigators.
“The public is advised to go about their lawful activities without fear. Security agencies are on the ground and have secured the area to prevent any secondary incidents,” the statement added.
Meanwhile, the incident has sparked debate among safety experts and community stakeholders, who have long warned about the dangers of uncontrolled scrap metal operations in residential neighbourhoods. The absence of regulatory oversight and safety measures in such businesses has been flagged as a major risk, especially in urban areas with high population density.
Reacting to the incident, a community leader in Mushin, Alhaji Sulaimon Adebayo, called for stricter enforcement of environmental and industrial safety regulations. “We are playing with fire when we allow unregulated scrap activities in residential areas. This is not the first time we’ve had explosions or fires from these places,” he said.
He commended the swift response of security agencies but emphasized the need for preventive measures, including public education and the enforcement of zoning laws.
In his statement, Ayeni conveyed the condolences of the Nigerian Army to the family of the deceased and wished the injured individuals a speedy recovery.
“The thoughts of the 81 Division are with the family of the deceased. We pray for the full recovery of those injured and assure residents that every effort is being made to ensure their continued safety,” the Army spokesperson said.
