Musa Mustapha of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has been declared the winner of the Yobe East senatorial bye-election.
The State Office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) made the decision through the Returning Officer of the bye-election, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Federal University, Gashua (FUGA), Ibrahim Ahmed Jajere.
The returning officer of the election declared Musa Mustapha the winner after the collation and counting of votes were done at the collation centre at the Federal Polytechnic, Damaturu, on Sunday.
Ibrahim Jajere declared that the APC candidate polled a total of 68,778 votes to defeat his closest rival, Aji Kolomi, of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who polled a total of 18,878 votes.
He further stated that the total votes cast were 90,949, with valid votes cast being 88,771, while 2,178 votes were rejected.
He then declared, “I, Associate Professor Ibrahim Ahmed Jajere, hereby certify that I am the returning officer for the 2024 Yobe East Senatorial By-election held on Saturday, February 3rd.”
Ibrahim Jajere added that “the election was contested, and Musa Mustapha of the APC polled 68,778, and Aji Kolomi of the PDP scored 18,878. That Musa Mustapha of APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected.”
Musa Mustapha, who is popularly known as ‘Coolers’, is a former Commissioner of Finance, Transport, and Energy in Yobe State. He replaces the immediate past Governor of State, Senator Ibrahim Geidam, who is currently the Minister of Police Affairs.
