The Chairman of the Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Tony Okocha, has stated that startling revelations from the former Head of Service in Rivers State, Dr George Nwaeke, have vindicated him regarding the involvement of the suspended Rivers State Governor, Sim Fubara, in the alarming security situation in the state.
Okocha’s statement followed disclosures by Dr Nwaeke, who alleged that Fubara was deeply involved in acts detrimental to peace and security in the oil-rich state. The former Head of Service specifically accused the suspended Governor Fubara of masterminding the bombing of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
In a statement issued in Abuja, the APC chairman noted that Dr Nwaeke’s account corroborated what the Rivers State chapter of the APC had already made public.
“It is a statement of fact that truth is immutable. The truth is like broad daylight, which shines through darkness and repels it to bring forth light. No matter the thickness of darkness, it cannot withstand daylight.
“The public revelation made by Dr George Nwaeke, the former Head of Service in Rivers State, a few days ago, on how the suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara initiated and orchestrated the bombing of the Rivers State House of Assembly, has vindicated the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State.
“It is important to emphasise that Dr George Nwaeke, as the Head of Service in Rivers State at the time, was the third most senior official in the state. As such, his account cannot be dismissed as hearsay.
“Recall that the APC in Rivers State, through its irrepressible State Chairman, Sir (Chief) Tony C. Okocha, DSSRS, JP, has consistently accused the suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara of being the mastermind behind the events of 29th October 2023, when Rivers people woke up to witness the bombing of the Rivers State House of Assembly—an edifice unparalleled in the 36 states across Nigeria.
“Taxpayers’ money in Rivers State was wasted in a manner that cannot be forgotten amidst scarce resources and a global economic crunch. As if that wasn’t enough, the suspended governor went a step further, less than 48 hours after the bombing, to personally supervise the demolition of the assembly complex, while his supporters cheered him on.
“The Supreme Court rightly described the suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara as a ‘dictator’ in its unanimous judgement delivered on 28th February 2025. Yes, he was a dictator!
“The explosive revelations—or allegations, if you prefer—made by Dr George Nwaeke further corroborate the position of the Rivers APC, as submitted by Sir (Chief) Tony C. Okocha, the State Party Chairman, that suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara is the architect of the entire political crisis in Rivers State. This crisis necessitated the swift intervention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, who declared a state of emergency to restore law and order and prevent a total breakdown of peace in Rivers State.
“In a press release, Dr George Nwaeke categorically stated that the political crisis was ‘orchestrated by Fubara himself’. According to Dr Nwaeke, the governor directed his Chief of Staff, Edison Ehie, to carry out the attack on the Assembly complex to prevent his impeachment by lawmakers aligned with Minister Nyesom Wike. Dr Nwaeke even revealed that he witnessed a cash handover to Edison Ehie for the purpose of the attack.
“What is most significant to the APC in Rivers State, as a responsible political party, is that Dr George Nwaeke’s revelations and testimonies about how suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his associates bombed the Rivers State House of Assembly are eyewitness accounts.”
Okocha further noted that the explosive account from the former Head of Service has exonerated the APC from the unsavoury security situation instigated by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and positioned the APC as a better alternative for Rivers voters in the forthcoming general elections.
“Again, it has clearly vindicated the APC in Rivers State as the only visible and viable opposition political party in the state. It has cemented the party’s place in the hearts of well-meaning Rivers people as the voice of the voiceless and the hope for a better Rivers State.
“The revelations made by the former Head of Service in Rivers State have further positioned the APC as a political party with a high level of integrity and the hope of Rivers people for a viable alternative to produce the Governor of Rivers State in 2027.
“The APC in Rivers State strongly believes that the relevant security agencies will act professionally to uncover the root cause of this matter and make their findings public. The verbal attacks staged against the resigned Head of Service will not deter the statesman from exposing the corruption of Sim Fubara, which we have consistently highlighted as an opposition political party.
“On this matter, the APC shall function as watchdogs.”
