The ruling All Progressives Congress on Wednesday expressed sadness over the destruction caused by flooding in parts of Borno State, which has so far recorded loss of lives and rendered many homeless.
APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, conveyed this in a statement issued in Abuja.
Thousands of residents in Maiduguri have been displaced, with the Nigerian Correctional Service recapturing three inmates after a jailbreak, while 80% of animals at the Sanda Kyarimi Park Zoo were reported dead.
Following the disaster, President Bola Tinubu, currently abroad, called for the immediate evacuation of residents in flood-affected communities.
Morka expressed the party’s deep regret over the damage caused and urged both state and Federal Government agencies to make every effort to address the humanitarian challenges posed by the disaster.
He said, “We are deeply saddened by the pain and suffering this unprecedented flooding has inflicted on our people in Maiduguri and surrounding areas, with the destruction of homes, farmlands, businesses, public buildings, and even the palace of the Shehu of Borno.
“As directed by President Bola Tinubu, Vice-President Senator Kashim Shettima has visited Maiduguri to conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the tragic incident and has instructed Federal Government emergency services to support the state in immediately evacuating affected residents to safety and providing all necessary assistance.
“We urge all agencies of Borno State and the Federal Government to leave no stone unturned in addressing the humanitarian challenges caused by this disaster. We pray for God to comfort and fully restore the victims of this incident.”
