There have been 16 European Championship tournaments since its inception in 1960.
Scheduled to take place every four years, in the even-numbered year between Fifa World Cups, it was originally called the European Nations’ Cup before changing to its current name in 1968.
Ten teams have been crowned champions to date. Germany and Spain three times, Italy and France twice, with Russia, Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Denmark, Greece and Portugal claiming one title each.
Two of Germany’s titles came before unification, won by West Germany in 1972 and 1980. Russia’s victory was as the Soviet Union, the Czech Republic was Czechoslavakia and Serbia was Yugoslavia.
To date, Spain are the only team to have won back-to-back titles, in 2008 and 2012.
England missed the chance to lift the European Championship trophy for the first time in 2021 as they lost the final at Wembley to Italy. The tournament should have been played in 2020 but was postponed a year due to the Covid pandemic.
