Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has congratulated Christians in the state and across the country on the celebration of Easter, urging them to reflect on the values of sacrifice, love and unity exemplified by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, Governor Alia described Easter as a powerful reminder of Christ’s selfless sacrifice for humanity, which offers freedom from condemnation and hope for a virtuous life and eternal salvation.
“Christ’s resurrection demonstrates selflessness, freeing humanity from chaos and nurturing hope and optimism,” the governor said.
Governor Alia, however, lamented that this year’s Easter is being marked at a time Benue State is grappling with a series of violent attacks. He assured residents that his administration was working closely with security agencies to restore peace and ensure the safety of lives and property.
He called on all Benue people to unite and collaborate in the fight against forces of evil determined to inflict pain and suffering on innocent citizens.
The governor also urged the faithful to uphold the core virtues of Easter, prayer, forgiveness, sacrifice, reconciliation and love, as taught by Jesus Christ.
“Now more than ever, we must come together as one people, support each other in faith and action and resist those who aim to destabilise our communities,” he stated.
Governor Alia concluded by praying for God’s continued grace and blessings upon the people of Benue during and after the Easter celebration.
Also, the Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has called on residents of the state to use the Easter celebration as an opportunity to recommit to the values of peace, harmony, and mutual respect.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, the governor urged the people to strengthen the bonds that unite them and work collectively towards building a prosperous and inclusive Edo State.
“Let us strengthen the bonds that unite us and work together to build the Edo State of our dreams—a State where opportunity thrives, and every citizen can reach their full potential,” the statement read.
Reflecting on the spiritual significance of Easter, Governor Okpebholo described it as a season that symbolizes hope, renewal, and the triumph of light over darkness. He said the message of Easter aligns with the values of unity, love, and resilience which are deeply embedded in the character of Edo people.
“As we celebrate this sacred season, let us be reminded of the enduring lessons of Easter: the importance of compassion, forgiveness, and the unwavering belief in a brighter future,” he noted.
The governor acknowledged the challenges the state has faced but expressed optimism in the collective ability of the people to overcome adversity through faith and shared commitment.
“Just as Easter signifies a new beginning, so too do we, as a State, continue to strive for progress, development, and a more prosperous future for all our citizens,” he added.
He reassured residents of his administration’s dedication to good governance, sustainable development, and the overall well-being of every Edo citizen, both at home and in the Diaspora.
Governor Okpebholo also encouraged citizens to use the festive period to reflect, spend quality time with loved ones, and extend kindness to those in need.
He concluded by wishing all residents a joyful and peaceful Easter celebration on behalf of the Edo State Government.
In the same vein, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) also congratulated Christians across the country on the celebration of Easter, describing the occasion as a profound moment of spiritual reflection on the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
In his Easter message yesterday, CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, emphasised that the resurrection of Christ symbolised the triumph of light over darkness and love over fear, encouraging Nigerians to draw strength from this truth and continue supporting one another in faith.
“Easter stands as the cornerstone of our faith, reminding us of the ultimate sacrifice made by Jesus Christ for the redemption of humanity,” Archbishop Okoh said. “His resurrection is a powerful testament to the might of God, offering us hope, forgiveness, and the promise of eternal life.”
Quoting 1 Corinthians 15:14 ‘And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith,’ the CAN President urged Christians to reflect deeply on the meaning of Easter and renew their commitment to Christ’s teachings.
He also highlighted Easter as both a religious and cultural celebration, referencing diverse expressions of the season across Nigeria—from colourful street parades in Lagos to solemn processions in Northern villages.
“This period reveals the rich blend of our nation’s faith and tradition,” he noted. “It is a time when families gather, communities unite, and our cultural heritage is showcased through music, dance, and festivities.”
Okoh expressed concern for Christians in regions facing persecution, acknowledging the trials they endure.
However, he emphasised that the Easter message offers assurance that adversity can be overcome through faith and unity.
“Just as Christ rose from the dead, we too can rise above our challenges. The resurrection affirms that light will always triumph over darkness, and love will conquer fear,” he affirmed.
The CAN President concluded his message with a call for resilience, prayer, and national unity during the Easter celebration and beyond.
Also, the Northern Senators Forum urged Nigerians to use the period of Easter celebration as a moment for national reflection and a renewed commitment to moral values, unity and compassion in the face of the country’s numerous challenges.
In an Easter message by the Forum’s Chairman, Senator Abdulaziz Yar’adua, the lawmakers called on citizens to reject hate speech, bigotry, corruption, banditry and terrorism, emphasising that building a society rooted in tolerance and empathy is essential for achieving national peace and prosperity.
“As we commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, we are reminded of the values of love, forgiveness and compassion that lie at the heart of Easter. These values are crucial to healing our nation and moving forward from the divisions and crises we face,” the statement read.
Senator Yar’adua noted that Easter goes beyond being a religious celebration, describing it as a powerful reminder of the triumph of good over evil and a call to work toward a more just and compassionate society.
He stressed that true fulfilment comes not from material wealth, but from nurturing meaningful relationships with God and fellow citizens. “This period calls for introspection and a renewed dedication to applying the teachings of Jesus Christ in our daily lives.
“By prioritising the well-being and happiness of others, we can build a country where everyone feels safe, valued, and included,” he said.
The Forum also encouraged Nigerians to show greater love and accommodation to their neighbours, noting that such values were critical for building a united and progressive nation.
The senators extended their warmest wishes to all Christians for a peaceful and joyous Easter celebration.
