The Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University Kano, Professor Sagir Adamu, has said that the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) has conducted over 100 kidney transplants since its inception in 2002.
He made the assertion on Tuesday during a three-day kidney transplant and urology workshop organized by the tertiary education trust fund (Tetfund), held at AKTH
Speaking on his behalf on the occasion, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Management Services, Professor Mahmud Sani, the vice-chancellor, explained that AKTH was one of the first northern teaching hospitals to engage in the localization of kidney transplants 20 years ago.
Professor Adamu then commended Tetfund for initiating the project in AKTH and called for sustainability and extension to other health facilities.
However, the supervising Chief Medical Director (CMD), AKTH Professor Umar Gajida, represented by the acting chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee, Dr. Dalha Gwarzo, pointed out that Tetfund has done a lot in terms of kidney transplants.
The head of the contractors who supplied laboratory equipment Alhaji Umar Ali, disclosed that over N200 million naira was spent to procure equipment such as laser for transplant operation, and stone crash of the kidney among others.
