Hajiya Aisha Buhari, the wife of Nigeria’s former president, joined by her children, alongside Kwara Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq and Kogi Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, as well as representatives from the European Union and the United Nations, were among the dignitaries who participated in the 2024 Carnival Calabar.
At the kickoff ceremony held at Millennium Park in Calabar, Cross River State Governor Prince Bassey Otu emphasised that this year’s theme, “Our Shared Prosperity,” resonates with a global audience present at the event.
“The theme this year is ‘Our Shared Prosperity.’ This shared prosperity has international appeal because we have attendees from across all continents,” Otu stated. He stressed the importance of fostering economic, social, and cultural prosperity for the community.
The governor also took time to recognise the founders of Carnival Calabar, including former governors Donald Duke, Liyel Imoke, and Prof. Ben Ayade, who have nurtured the event since its inception in 2004, bringing in more participating and non-participating bands as it enters its second decade. He committed to enhancing the event further, announcing the introduction of a Diaspora band in the upcoming year.
Kwara Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq praised Governor Otu’s administration for its creativity and evolution of the carnival. He noted its significance in promoting Nigeria on a global scale and boosting the state’s revenue.
“This event places Nigeria on an international platform. We often overlook how it enhances the state’s internally generated revenue. December in Calabar will become a preferred destination, not just Lagos,” he asserted.
Kogi Governor also praised Otu’s leadership, reflecting on the vibrant energy of the participants and the commitment of the local community.
Following the flag-off, revellers, including both competitive and non-competitive bands, proceeded along the 12-kilometre carnival route, showcasing and interpreting the theme at various adjudication locations.
Mr. Gab Onah, Chairman of the Carnival Commission, acknowledged the support from sponsors of this year’s event, which included Afrexim Bank, MTN, Zenith Bank, Arise, International Energy Insurance Company, DSTV, and First Bank, among others.
