Towards showcasing the unparalleled beauty and topnotch texture of the Africa traditional textiles which includes Nigeria’s Adire, royal regalia, etc, the 2024 African Fashion Week London (AFWL) in its 14th edition is set to hold between 11 and 12 October at the Kensington and Chelsea Conference and Events Centre, Hornton Street, London, England.
The two day event will feature the creative and talented designers from every nook and cranny of Africa including Nigeria, Botswana, Jamaica, Ghana, and South Africa who would showcase the continent to the world on the AFWL runway.
Speaking during the briefing of the upcoming event in Lagos during the week, the founder AFWL and the Adire Odua brand, Olori Ronke Ademiluyi-Ogunwusi said the AFWL event, which started in 2011 at the Gibson Hall London has over the years showcased to the world thousands of African heritage brands from around the globe to the world. “The idea is to create a platform that enables African designers to thrive.”
She noted that the AFWL this year would amplify Adire and other African traditional fabrics. Fashion in Africa is part of our DNA, it is our identity and we must bear it with so much pride and showcase it with pride as well. Nigeria continues to be the fashion hub of Africa. Looking at the just concluded Ojude Oba festival and how the world embraced it, you’ll understand how big Nigeria is. This is what African Fashion Week London and Nigeria is about, showcasing the beauty of Africa and everything we represent as a people to the world. One of the shows at AFWL is going to be inspired by the Ojude Oba Festival, as designers would create designs that were inspired by the looks and colours from the Ojude Oba festival and put it on the runway.”
Olori Ademiluyi-Ogunwusi who is also the wife of Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife said the Ooni has been the core foundation of the AFWL and Africa Fashion Week, Nigeria, (AFWN). “Prior to starting Africa Fashion Week London in 2011, there was no platform that showcased creative talent in Africa. So, when I came up with the idea, the Ooni and I brainstormed for innovative ways to showcase the platform.”
