Activist calls for elimination of bandits in Sokoto

From Shafa’atu Suleiman, Sokoto

A civil rights activist in Sokoto State, Basharu Altine Guyawa, has urged the military to launch a comprehensive operation to eliminate bandits hiding in the eastern parts of Isa and Sabon Birni local government areas.

Guyawa, who is the State Coordinator, Movement for Social Justice and Good Governance, made the call in a statement, saying his team had been monitoring the activities of criminal gangs and the efforts of security forces to flush them out.

Guyawa said the ongoing military offensives had recorded significant successes, particularly in the forests of Gundumi, stretching towards Kuyan-Bana and Gwauro Hills. He confirmed that notorious kingpins, such as Kachalla Chomo and Kachalla Haru, were under pressure as troops dismantled their hideouts.

He, however, urged the security agencies not to relent but to advance towards the Maberaya Forest and Fakai axis to fully dominate the eastern border corridor. “This eastern axis, from Manawa and Gwandi to Tsaika, must be cleared and secured,” he said. The activist also advised that the offensive should extend through Gatawa to Zango and link up with Burkusuma, up to the Niger Republic border. “If this is done thoroughly, not even bandit warlords like Bello Turji or any other criminal will find a safe haven in Eastern Isa and Sabon Birni,” he declared.

Guyawa said his suggestions were being presented to the relevant authorities in the spirit of national security improvement, rather than criticism.

The call for a comprehensive military operation comes amid growing concerns about the activities of bandits in the region, which have led to loss of lives and property. The activist’s proposal is aimed at ensuring the security of the area and preventing the bandits from causing further harm.
