Former Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Abubakar Y. Suleiman, has returned as Speaker.
This development followed the resignation of Speaker Babayo Akuyam during the Wednesday plenary.
Additionally, the Deputy Speaker resigned to allow the former Deputy Speaker, Jamilu Umar Dahiru, to return to his office.
Recall that both Abubakar Y. Suleiman and Jamilu Umar Dahiru were removed by the Court of Appeal and faced a rerun last month, which they won. Subsequently, they were sworn in as members of the Assembly.
The former Speaker also represents Hardawa Constituency, while the former Deputy, Ahmed Abdullahi, hails from Dass constituency in the state Assembly.
While announcing their resignation, the outgoing speaker and his deputy stated that the move is part of the agreement reached by the lawmakers to step down for Abubakar Sulaimen and Jamilu Darihu.
They expressed appreciation to their colleagues and other staff of the assembly for the support and cooperation given to them during their stewardship.
To this end, the house immediately re-elected Abubakar Y. Sulaiman, while Jamilu Umaru Dahiru was also re-elected as the new Deputy Speaker.
In his acceptance speech, the reelected speaker, Abubakar Y. Sulaiman, thanked the outgoing speaker and his deputy for exhibiting a high sense of maturity while discharging their legislative duties.
He pledged his readiness to continue providing effective legislation that will better the lives of the citizenry.
It is noteworthy that the appeal court nullified the elections of four members of the state assembly last year, giving a ruling for a re-run in some polling units in their various constituencies.
