The Abia State Government has advised the public not to make use of Aro Ajatakiri stream in Ajata na Igu community in the Ikwuano Local Government Area of the State henceforth, saying the water in the stream has been contaminated and unfit for human consumption.
The Commissioner for Environment, Philemon Ogbonna, gave the advice in a release he signed, saying the government action became necessary following the health hazard consuming water from the stream posed to the public.
He told the public to adhere strictly to the health advice, pending investigation and feasibility study in the stream and the area.
“It has come to the notice of the State government that Aro Ajatakiri stream in Aro Ajatakiri autonomous community has been contaminated and unfit for human consumption”, Ogbonna said.
The nature of contamination recorded in the stream was not disclosed by the ministry in the press release.
Efforts by Arogidigba Global Journal to speak with the traditional ruler of Ajata na Igu community, King Larry Agwu, on the matter were not successful as phone calls put to his line did not connect.
