Traders at the Umuehilegbu section of the Ariaria International Market, Aba, Abia State, took to the streets yesterday to protest the appointment of new leadership for the market.
Abia State Government on yesterday morning, announced changes in the leadership of all the markets in the state. Reports from the city said the announcement sparked off protest at the Umuehilegbu Industrial Market where the traders were said to have rejected the new leadership.
The protesting traders accused the new appointees of being former executives who served under the administration of ex-Governor Okezie Ikpeazu.
The traders claimed that members of the new executive were individuals who actively opposed Dr. Alex Otti during the 2023 general elections.
Some of the traders who spoke to newsmen wondered why the same executive that had been in charge of the market for so long would be appointed to head the market.
They appealed to Governor Otti to intervene and reverse the appointment.
