The Secretary, Nigerian Bar Association, Idemili Branch in Anambra State, Chukwubuikem Azoro, who was kidnapped by yet-to-be-identified gunmen, has been freed by his abductors.
It was gathered that Azoro was freed in the early hours of Monday after being held captive by the kidnappers for 15 days.
A source, who is a member of the state NBA but spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorised to speak on the matter, disclosed the details of Azoro’s release to our correspondent on Monday.
He said the lawyer was released after an undisclosed amount of ransom was paid to the kidnappers.
He said, “Yes, he was released in the early hours of today and he has reunited with his family. The kidnappers released him after collecting some amount of money as ransom. I don’t know the exact amount.
“Members of the NBA had embarked on a one-week boycott of all courts in the state to press for his release, but now that he has been released, the boycott has been suspended immediately and the body has also urged relevant authorities to ensure they put a stop to it to forestall future occurrence.”
The lawyer was abducted by some yet-to-be-identified gunmen around the Abagana area in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Saturday, May 11, 2024, two weeks after his wedding.
His abduction had forced members of the state NBA to boycott and shut down all courts in the state for two days in protest of the kidnapping.
The peaceful protest, which was addressed by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, reportedly prompted the state police command to launch an intensive search, leading to Azoro’s release.
