Eminent Nigerians, including Lagos State Governor Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu; former Minister of Works and Housing Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola; Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu; Alhaji Femi Okunnu; former banker Mr. Akin Kekere-Ekun; Justice Olorunnimbe (Rtd.); and Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, among others, are expected to attend as Eko Club celebrates its 50th anniversary, pledging to sustain efforts in preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of Lagos.
The 50th Anniversary Planning Committee Chairman, Dr. Ade Shamsideen Dosunmu, made this known over the weekend at a press conference in Surulere, announcing a month-long series of activities that highlight the club’s achievements and contributions to the development of Lagos over the past five decades.
According to Dosunmu, activities are planned for the event, which commenced on September 6, 2024, with a Jumat Service at the Lagos Central Mosque, followed by a Church Service on Sunday, a lecture and documentary screening on September 11, as well as a health walk, a special event with the President, and the grand finale.
He added that there would also be a Cultural Day where Lagos heritage, in the form of egungun, among others, would be on display.

Dosunmu noted that the club’s dynamic programmes have nurtured talent, celebrated the city’s diversity, and passed down Lagos’ traditions to younger generations.
“One cannot speak of the achievements of Eko Club without acknowledging the numerous contributions it has made to the cultural tapestry of our state.
“Through its various dynamic cultural programmes, the club has nurtured budding talents, celebrated our rich heritage, and preserved our tradition for future generations.
“All these stand as a testimony to our commitment to showcasing the diverse cultural heritage of Lagos.
“Additionally, Eko Club has been instrumental in charitable endeavors, leaving an indelible mark on society. From providing educational scholarships to underprivileged children to supporting healthcare initiatives, the club has consistently reaffirmed its mission of service to our community.
“These acts of kindness have provided much-needed hope and encouragement to those in need, creating a ripple effect of positive change,” he stated.
Dosunmu, who is also a former president of the association, while acknowledging the numerous contributions of the founders, past presidents, executive members, and all those who have shaped the club, urged members to remain committed to the club’s core values of unity, diversity, and progress, adding, “Looking ahead, I believe that the next fifty years hold even greater possibilities for Eko Club.”
“Together, we can continue to make a lasting impact, not just within our club, but within the wider Lagos community,” he further added.
On his part, Eko Club President Abdulrasaq Olugbenga said the club had grown into a respected pressure group advocating for progressive change in society.
Amodu said this feat had been attainable due to the vision of “our founding fathers, elders, captains of industries, affiliations, and the guidance of our traditional fathers.”
According to the club president, this year’s celebration carries great significance, having witnessed tremendous progress, “improved on our intrapersonal relations within the club,” and fostered fruitful business engagement.
He added that members were increasing recognition by undertaking programmes that had put the club on the world map for good.
“I commend the tenacity of my blessed brothers, great men of honour and integrity who have contributed immensely to the growth and development of Eko Club, especially making our tenure laudable and hitch-free,” he said.
Also in his remarks, another prominent member of the club, Adetokunbo Sekoni, equally commended the initiatives of the forefathers, who, he said, founded the club in love.
According to him, Eko Club “is now becoming a rallying point for us children, where we network and make meaningful contributions to the growth and progress of our dear state.”
