In a bid to address the country’s energy challenges and mitigate the impacts of climate change, Nigeria is faced with the urgent need to transition to renewable energy sources.

This was the central message at a recent Townhall meeting organized by Tracka/BudgIT Foundation in Oroworukwo Community, Rivers State.

Smith Nwokocha, Tracka Community Champion, emphasized the importance of collective action in driving this transition. “We can’t continue to rely on fossil fuels; it’s harming our environment and economy. We need to demand action from our leaders to invest in renewable energy.”

The meeting, attended by over 55 community members, including youths, women, and men, highlighted the need for community involvement in decision-making processes related to energy policies. Nwokocha stressed that the transition to renewable energy is not just a necessity but a matter of urgency.

“We’re not just talking about solar or wind power; we’re talking about a comprehensive plan that addresses our energy needs and reduces our carbon footprint,” he said. “The government needs to take concrete steps towards renewable energy, and we need to hold them accountable.”

One community member echoed Nwokocha’s sentiments, saying, “We’re the ones who suffer the most from environmental degradation; we need to be part of the solution.”

Nwokocha added, “Renewable energy is not just a nicety; it’s a necessity. Our leaders need to understand that this is a matter of urgency; we can’t afford to wait.”

The meeting concluded with a call to action, urging community members to demand accountability from their leaders and advocate for renewable energy policies. Nwokocha emphasized the power of collective action in driving change.

“We can make a difference if we work together,” he said. “Let’s demand a better future for ourselves and for generations to come.”

As Nigeria navigates the global energy transition, community-led initiatives like this Townhall meeting demonstrate the growing demand for sustainable energy practices. With continued pressure from citizens, the government may be compelled to prioritize renewable energy, securing a cleaner, more sustainable future for the country.
