The Honourable Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, has voiced serious concerns over ongoing conflicts between mining companies operating in Nasarawa Local Government Area, calling on the state government to take immediate steps to resolve these disputes.
This was communicated during a formal visit to Nasarawa State’s Government House in Lafia by a delegation from the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, led by Engr. Obadiah Simon Nkom, Director General of the Nigeria Mining Cadastre Office, Abuja on Friday.
Engr. Nkom, speaking on behalf of the Honourable Minister, emphasized the importance of resolving the conflicts before the national council meeting, stating that a peaceful and stable environment is essential for attracting and sustaining investment in the solid minerals sector.
He expressed confidence in Nasarawa State’s ability to host a successful and impactful event, given its strategic importance in Nigeria’s mining landscape.
The disputes have reportedly created tensions among various stakeholders in the mining sector within the Nasarawa Local Government Area, posing a potential threat to the region’s stability and investment climate.
Sun Reports that the delegation brought with them a letter from Dr. Alake, which not only highlighted the need for urgent intervention by the state government but also detailed specific recommendations for addressing the conflicts, based on findings from a committee report.
Responding, Governor Abdullahi A. Sule, who received the delegation in the Government House Council Chamber, expressed his administration’s commitment to swiftly implementing the minister’s recommendations.
He assured that the state government is dedicated to creating a conducive environment for mining activities, which are crucial to the state’s economic development.
Governor Sule also thanked the Federal Government for selecting Nasarawa State as the host of the upcoming 6th National Council on Mining and Mineral Resources Development, scheduled for November 2024.
Governor Sule reiterated his administration’s focus on ensuring that all mining activities within the state are conducted in an environmentally sustainable and socially responsible manner, with a commitment to the well-being of local communities.
The national council meeting is a significant event that will gather key stakeholders from across Nigeria’s mining industry to discuss policies, challenges, and the future of the sector.
