The Nigerian Army has vowed not to allow itself to be used by certain interest groups to undermine democratic governance in the country.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Taoreed Lagbaja, stated this in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, during the opening ceremony of the Chief of Army Staff Combined Second and Third Quarters Conference 2024, held at the Akwa Ibom State Council of Chiefs Hall on Tuesday.
“As Chief of Army Staff, my simple response to the call is, ‘Thanks, but no thanks!’ The Nigerian Army will not allow itself to be used to undemocratically advance any interests.”
“As the service that has faced significant criticism due to previous military interventions in Nigeria, the Nigerian Army remains secure and united. We are resolute in sustaining our ongoing efforts to ensure maximum revenue accrues to the Federal Government for the benefit of all Nigerians,” Lagbaja stated.
He noted that since the army’s senior hierarchy last met in April for the First Quarter Conference, the country has faced a new set of security challenges.
He added that the army will review its farms and ranches to boost food production in the country.
“We have witnessed a new set of security challenges in the country,” he said.
“Aside from the known threats of terrorism, insurgency, banditry, illegal mining, and farmer/herder conflicts, the recent protests, primarily driven by discontent over economic issues and government policies, have resulted in significant unrest and, in some cases, violence.
“This situation reminds us that, as an Armed Force, we must not only focus on physical security and the defence of the nation but also recognise that food and social security issues can escalate into physical security challenges.”
To support the new military food policy, Lagbaja said the Army Headquarters is reviewing proposals for partnerships with Ministries, Departments, Agencies, and reputable private organisations on how best to collaborate to address the food crisis in the country.
The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Umo Eno, who declared the conference open, reiterated his commitment to assisting the Nigerian Army as he pursues the ARISE Agenda.
