The Federal Government has been applauded for its giant stride in ensuring the autonomy of the local government and enjoined to ensure that the allocations appropriated to the three tiers are judiciously utilised.
Men Missionary Union of the Nigerian Baptist Convention which gave the commendation at the end of its 44th annual congress in Asaba, Delta state.
In a five point resolution signed by the chairman of the communique committee, Barr Leke Olajide; Secretary, Olasunkanmi Adefila and other officials and made available to newsmen in Asaba, the union said the federal government should put machinery in place at putting an end to corruption, banditry, kidnapping and wanton destruction of lives and properties in Nigeria.
The Baptist men bemoaned the suffering in the land as a result of food insecurity even as they urged the federal government to alleviate the situation..
The communique further urged the federal government to look into the economy of the country with a view to ensuring the stability of the naira as well ensuring that our future elections are credible, free and fair.
Earlier, National President of the men missionary union of Baptist Convention , Dr. Soye Peniel Asawo, charged governments at all levels to be critical in the fight against corruption and above all, lead by example.
Speaking at a press conference during the congress, Dr Asawo said: “our political leaders who should lead by example have not demonstrated the same sacrifice they expect Nigerians to pay which they themselves are unwilling to pay.
“The cost of governance and the level of wastage in the country is second to non globally and except those in power begin to trim down and make the sacrifice they expect the common Nigerians to make there won’t be any headway and the situation will remain unchanged.
.He urged the Tinubu administration to initiate polices that would appreciate the naira so that Nigerians can live a better life.
“We don’t want to go into specifics of whether fuel subsidy or no subsidy. At the end of the day what Nigerians want is that they should be able to use their money to buy what they need ,otherwise, even the adjusted salary with the new minimum wage will definitely not take people home if the value of the Naira does not improved.
“So, we are calling on government to fight corruption and be seen to be fighting corruption as well as insecurity.”
