One person lost their life and six more went missing after a British-flagged boat sank off the coast of Sicily early on Monday.
The 183-foot ship, which was carrying 22 passengers, came into the strong storms that have been affecting the western Mediterranean. A one-year-old child was among the fifteen survivors who were saved.
Local media reported waterspouts forming as the storm raged overnight. The yacht, with British, American, and Canadian nationals onboard, sank in waters 50 meters deep. Divers continue to search for the missing individuals.
One body has been recovered, though the nationality remains unconfirmed. Eight survivors are receiving hospital treatment. “We are aware of the incident and in contact with local authorities,” stated the UK Foreign Office.
The Italian coastguard confirmed a nearby vessel provided initial assistance before rescue teams arrived. Local media identified the yacht as the “Bayesian,” with its last recorded position near Porticello around 4:00 am local time.
